The Chattanooga Mocs and the Tennessee State Tigers meet in college basketball action from the Gentry Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The Chattanooga Mocs will look to remain unbeaten after back-to-back 69-66 wins following their victory over UAB last time out. Jamaal Walker also added 6 points with a team-high 5 assists in the victory for Chattanooga. David Jean-Baptiste leads Chattanooga in scoring with an average of 18 points per game while Malachi Smith leads the Mocs in rebounding and assists with an average of 11 rebounds and 4 assists per game this season. As a team, Chattanooga is averaging 77 points on 45.8% shooting from the field, 37.4% from 3-point range and 76% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.3 points on 45.7% shooting from the field and 27.7% from 3-point range this season.
The Tennessee State Tigers will look to build off of their first win of the season coming in the form of a 90-68 win over Crowley’s Ridge College last time out. Marcus Fitzgerald led the way with 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting with 3 threes and a pair of steals while Mark Freeman came right behind with 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting with a pair of threes and a team-high 5 assists with 3 steals. Monty Johal added 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting with a pair of triples and Josh Linder chipped in 10 points with 6 boards of his own to finish off the scoring in double figures for Tennessee State in the win. Shakem Johnson also had 7 points with a team-high 9 rebounds and a pair of steals in the victory. Freeman leads Tennessee State in scoring and assists with an average of 17 points and 3 assists per game while Johnson is Tennessee State’s top rebounder with 7 rebounds per game this season. Laying the points on the road seems like a cinch with an unbeaten Chattanooga team until you realize that while they’re winning games, they’re having to fight through a lot of close games so you have to wonder if that’ll take its toll on the team in the long run. With that said, the Mocs are still winning and Tennessee State has yet to cover a line against a D-I opponent this season. Line feels a bit fishy but if it’s a trap I’m biting. Give me Chattanooga and lay the points in this one.
