The James Madison Dukes and the VCU Rams meet in college basketball action from the Stuart Siegel Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The James Madison Dukes will look for a big road win to add to their 3-2 mark this year after picking up a 98-55 win over subdivision Alice Lloyd by a final score of 98-55 last time out. Matt Lewis led the Dukes with 29 points on 10 of 14 shooting with 5 threes and 3 steals while Michael Christmas chipped in 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting with a pair of threes and a pair of steals. Julien Wooden added 11 points to round out the scoring in double figures for the Dukes in the win while Terell Strickland added 7 points to match his team-high 7 rebounds with 6 assists as well in the win. Terrence Edwards also added 9 points with 6 boards and a team-high 8 assists while Justin Amadi had 6 rebounds. Lewis leads the Dukes in scoring with an average of 21.2 points per game while Edwards leads the Dukes in rebounding with 5.4 rebounds per game and Strickland leads JMU in assists with 3.8 assists per game this season. As a team, James Madison is averaging 78.2 points on 44.6% shooting from the field, 33.1% from 3-point range and 70.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65 points on 40.6% shooting from the field and 29.6% from 3-point range this season.
The VCU Rams will look to build on their 6-2 record with a 4th straight win in the form of a 93-68 win over Western Carolina last time out. Nahshon Hyland led the Rams with 31 points on 11 of 17 shooting with 6 threes while Jamir Watkins added 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting with 3 triples and Corey Douglas Jr. chipped in 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Vince Williams Jr. added 10 points with a team-high 6 rebounds and 4 assists to finish off the scoring in double figures for VCU in the win while Adrian Baldwin Jr. and Hason Ward each had 4 assists and Jimmy Clark III had 6 points and 4 steals in the victory. Hyland leads VCU in scoring with an average of 18.6 points per game while Williams Jr. leads VCU in rebounding with 4.9 rebounds per game and Baldwin Jr. is VCU’s top assist man, dishing out 5.1 assists per game this season. I get why the points with James Madison are tempting as it’s hard for a defense-first team like VCU to cover big lines normally. However, VCU isn’t your typical defense-first team, and we saw it first hand against Western Carolina as the Rams can hang points in bunches on you when need be and sometimes the onslaught is just too much to handle. JMU had scoring issues to begin with, and now, facing that VCU defense, I just don’t see a way back for James Madison in this one. I’ll lay the points with VCU at home in this one.
