Providence has had a pretty solid season so far. The Friars opened at 2-2 with wins over Fairfield and Davidson alongside losses 79-58 to Indiana and 88-71 to Alabama. Since then it’s been three straight victories, 79-67 over Fairleigh Dickinson, 79-70 over TCU and 80-77 over Seton Hall.
In the win over the Pirates, Providence’s Nate Watson logged 23 points with 11 rebounds and one assist. David Duke also doubled up, notching 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Jimmy Nichols finished in double-figures with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist as well.
Over on the Butler side, it’s been a disappointing start. The Bulldogs kicked off with a win 66-62 over Western Michigan, but since then it’s been three straight losses. Those defeats came 85-66 to Villanova, 68-60 to Indiana and 76-73 to Southern Illinois.
In the loss to the Salukis, Butler’s top scorer was Chuck Harris with 22 points, six assists and four rebounds. Bryce Golden added 17 points with nine rebounds and one assist, while Bryce Nze doubled up on 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
The Bulldogs are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 home games and 0-4 ATS in the last four overall. The Bulldogs are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 after an ATS loss and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Friars are 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. Providence is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 overall and the over is 4-0 in their last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on Butler here. Providence has a couple of close outcomes in their wins this year, beating Davidson by one and Seton Hall by three. The Bulldogs hung around with Indiana reasonably well (eight-point loss) and were right with a good Salukis team 76-73 in their last game. I think Butler has enough scoring prowess on the roster to keep the pace here and manage a cover. Should be an interesting matchup.
