The Coppin State Eagles and the Iona Gaels meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Hynes Athletic Center.
Coppin State is just 1-6 overall this year. The Eagles have lost consecutive games to UMBC and Virginia Tech in their last two outings. As for Iona, they’re 4-3 so far this season. Coppin State opened up the season with four straight losses, falling to Duke, George Washington, Drexel and Georgetown in succession. The Eagles got a nice win 86-80 over UNC Greensboro, but since then it’s been a pair of losses. Those came 66-49 to UMBC and 97-57 to Virginia Tech.
In the loss to the Hokies, Coppin State’s leading scorer was Anthony Tarke with 19 points, two rebounds and two assists. The only other Eagles player in double-figures there was Isaiah Gross, who notched 12 points and three rebounds in 15 minutes on the court.
Over on the Iona side, it’s been a mixed bag through seven games. The Gaels kicked off the year at 2-3, beating Hofstra and Fairfield with losses to Seton Hall, Morgan State and Fairfield. Since then it’s been two wins over Rider, 70-56 on Friday and 72-64 on Saturday.
In the Saturday victory, Iona’s leading scorer was Isaiah Ross with 25 points, one rebound and one assist. Asante Gist added a double-double on 15 points, 10 assists and four rebounds, and Nelly Junior Joseph almost hit that threshold on 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Gaels are 3-10-2 ATS in their last 15 home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall. Iona is 2-8-2 ATS in their last 12 at home versus a team with a losing road record and the under is 4-0 in their last four Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four road games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games overall. Coppin State is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and the under is 11-4-1 in their last 16 road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Iona. The Gaels have been all over the place on both sides of the ball this season, depending on the matchup. Iona has gone from blowout wins over teams like Fairfield and Rider to blowout losses to teams like Fairfield and Morgan State. It’s tough to know what to expect from game to game. That said, the Gaels should have a good matchup against Coppin State, who generally hasn’t been a great scoring team this season.
