The NJIT Highlanders and the Rider Broncs meet in college basketball action from Trask Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon.
The NJIT Highlanders will be looking to bounce back after starting their season with a 72-60 loss to Temple last time out. Zach Cooks led NJIT with 18 points with a pair of threes and 4 rebounds while Dylan O’Hearn added 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting as the only other double-digit scorer for NJIT in the losing effort. Antwuan Butler added 7 points with 5 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists while Souleymane Diakite added 8 points with a team-high 6 rebounds. As a team, NJIT is averaging 60 points on 34.3% shooting from the field, 27.8% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72 points on 40% shooting from the field and 30% from 3-point range this season.
The Rider Broncs could use a win to snap out of a 1-5 hole after a 72-64 loss to Iona last time out. Dontrell McQuarter led the Broncs with 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 8 rebounds while Dwight Murray Jr. added 15 points with 6 rebounds and Christian Ings chipped in 10 points on 4 of 8 shooting to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for Rider in the defeat. Tyrel Bladen added 6 points with 5 rebounds as well in the defeat for Rider. Murray Jr. leads Rider with an average of 15.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5 assists per game this season, all team-highs. As a team, Rider is averaging 68.3 points on 43.1% shooting from the field, 34.7% from behind the arc and 74.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 77 points on 47.9% shooting from the field and 36.2% from the 3-point line this season.
NJIT is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Wednesday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss. Rider is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 10-1 in their last 11 home games.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game as NJIT’s only had one game but Rider’s had 6 and potentially looked worse as the season’s progressed. With that said, this is still a Rider team that played a strong half against Syracuse and took St. John’s down to the wire earlier this year so I’m thinking if steel sharpens steel, this should be a great matchup but ultimately I think Rider escapes with the win here so I’ll back Rider in this pick ‘em scenario.
