The USC Upstate Spartans and the Tennessee Volunteers meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Thompson-Boling Arena.
USC Upstate is struggling at 0-7 so far. The Spartans have lost to Winthrop and UNC Greensboro in their last two games. As for Tennessee, they’re rolling along at 5-0 this season. The Volunteers are coming off a 36-point win over Saint Joseph’s on Monday. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
USC Upstate has been fairly close in a couple of games, but for the most part they’re getting blown out this season. The Spartans fell to Southern Wesleyan, Furman, Eastern Kentucky and Georgia Southern in their first four games. Since then it’s been two losses to Winthrop 95-77 and 107-77, then a 65-57 loss to UNC Greensboro.
In the loss to UNCG, USC Upstate’s top scorer was Tommy Bruner with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Dalvin White added 12 points with five rebounds and two assists, while Nevin Zink chipped in with 11 points and two boards.
Over on the Tennessee side, it’s been smooth sailing all year. The Volunteers opened up with wins 56-47 over Colorado, 65-56 over Cincinnati, 79-38 over App State and 103-49 over Tennessee Tech. On Monday, Tennessee bagged another big win 102-66 over Saint Joseph’s.
In the win over the Hawks, Tennessee’s top scorer was Victor Bailey with 18 points and three assists. Santiago Vescovi added 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Yves Pons just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
Tennessee is 0-4 ATS in their last four Wednesday games and 5-0 ATS in their last five overall. The Volunteers are 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win and 5-0 ATS in their last five home games.
Meanwhile, USC Upstate is 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven as an underdog.
PICK: I’m going to take Tennessee here. That said, the spread on this game is going to be ridiculous everywhere, so you could make a case for taking USC Upstate on principle. Anyhow, the mismatch in this game is clear: the Volunteers have poured in 205 points across their last two games, allowing just 115 on the other side. We can expect another lopsided result in this matchup, and it’s anyone’s guess when Tennessee will ease their foot off the gas pedal. To me it’s more likely the Vols cover than not.
