Youngstown State kicked off the year with three straight wins, taking out Point Park 72-52, Binghamton 79-65 and WVU Tech 80-66. The Penguins took their first loss of the season 79-64 against Northern Kentucky last Saturday, but were able to rebound Sunday with a 70-60 win.
In the Sunday victory, Youngstown State’s top scorer was Naz Bohannon with 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Michael Akuchie doubled up with 14 points and 12 rebounds there, and Shemar Rathan-Mayes added 13 points with three rebounds and three assists.
Over on the Cleveland State side, they opened the year with three straight losses to Toledo 70-61, Ohio 101-46 and Ohio State 67-61. Since then it’s been consecutive wins for the Vikings though, and those have come 63-61 and 89-80 over Fort Wayne in the last pair.
In the Sunday win over the Mastodons, Cleveland State’s D’Moi Hodge went off for a whopping 46 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Also in double-figures for the Vikings there was Torrey Patton with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Vikings are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. Cleveland State is 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 Saturday games and the under is 8-1 in their last nine Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Penguins are 6-2 ATS in their last eight Saturday games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The under is 4-1 in Youngstown State’s last five Saturday games and 4-1 in their last five after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to stick with the Vikings in this one. Cleveland State hasn’t been all that impressive on offense, and they’ve scored more than 63 points just once in a game so far. That said, the Vikings have also stuck with their opponents pretty well this—outside of the Ohio game. If things go Cleveland State’s way, they’ll keep the pace slow and the scoring low here. I think they can stay in range well enough to eke out a cover.
