The Norfolk State Spartans and the George Mason Patriots meet in college basketball action from EagleBank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Norfolk State Spartans come into this game looking to bounce back after an 80-72 loss to NC-Wilmington last time out. J.J. Matthews led the Spartans with 23 points on 10 of 15 shooting while Devante Carter added 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting and Kashaun Hicks chipped in 12 points on 3 of 4 shooting with a pair of threes to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for Norfolk State in the loss. Joe Bryant Jr. added 6 points with a team-high 5 rebounds while Kyonze Chavis had 5 points with 4 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists. Carter leads the Spartans with an average of 16.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists, all team-high averages. As a team, Norfolk State is averaging 66.8 points on 43.8% shooting from the field, 40% from 3-point range and 65.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.2 points on 36.7% shooting from the field and 27.6% from 3-point range this season.
The George Mason Patriots will look to add to their current three-game losing streak after a 70-65 win over Towson in their last matchup. Josh Oduro led the Patriots with 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting with 8 rebounds while Javon Greene added 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting and Jamal Hartwell II added 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting with 3 threes to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for the Patriots in the win. Greg Calixte chipped in 7 points with 7 rebounds while AJ Wilson added 6 rebounds and Xavier Johnson had 3 assists and 3 steals. Miller leads George Mason in scoring and rebounding with an average of 20 points and 7 rebounds per game while Jamal Hartwell II added 2.6 assists per game this season. As a team, George Mason is averaging 71 points on 42.7% shooting from the field, 32.3% from 3-point range and 59.3% shooting from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 68.6 points on 42.9% shooting from the field and 36.7% shooting from 3-point range this season.
Norfolk State is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 road games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Saturday games. George Mason is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Saturday games and 6-21 ATS in their last 27 home games against a team with a winning road record while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 home games.
It’s hard getting a feel for two teams we really don’t see very much of with Norfolk State in the MEAC and George Mason not getting a ton of attention in the A-10. With that said, George Mason is the better team in the stronger conference, but I’m not sure there’s a 9.5-point gap here between the two teams, especially when George Mason’s last two wins against Towson and VMI have come by a combined 7 points. I think I’ll take a shot here with Norfolk State and the points.
