The Coppin State Eagles and the Towson Tigers meet Saturday in college basketball action from SECU Arena.
Coppin State is sitting at just 1-7 on the season. The Eagles have lost their last three games to UMBC, Virginia Tech and Iona in succession. As for Towson, they’re 0-4 this year. Coppin State kicked off the year with four straight losses. Those came 81-71 to Duke, 85-69 to George Washington, 69-54 to Drexel and 80-48 to Georgetown. After a six-point win over UNCG, the Eagles took three more losses 66-49 to UMBC, 97-57 to Virginia Tech and 85-65 to Iona.
In the loss to the Gaels, Coppin State’s top contributor was Kyle Cardaci with 18 points and one rebound. Koby Thomas managed 17 points with five rebounds, and Anthony Tarke added 12 points with five boards and two assists.
Over on the Tigers’ side, they’ve had even worse luck this season at 0-4. Towson opened with losses 89-54 to Virginia, then 79-68 to San Francisco and 74-65 to Buffalo. On Wednesday the Tigers fell again, this time 70-65 to George Mason.
In the loss to the Patriots, Towson’s top two scorers were Juwan Gray and Nicolas Timberlake, each with 14 points and a combined three rebounds. Zane Martin was also in double-figures for the Tigers in that game with 11 points, five rebounds and one assist.
Towson is 0-4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 7-1 ATS in their last eight Saturday games. The over is 4-1 in the Tigers’ last five home games and 4-1 in their last five after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five road games and 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven overall. The under is 11-5-1 in Coppin State’s last 17 road games and 20-8-1 in their last 29 Saturday games.
PICK: I’m sticking with Coppin State here. Granted, there’s not much to like about a matchup between two teams with one combined win. Coppin State has had a couple of pretty good offensive outings, but has only surpassed 70 points twice this season. Towson has been even flatter, with a max of 68 points scored in a quartet of outings. I like the Eagles’ offense in relative terms right now so I think they’ll bang out a cover. This should be a competitive game, and close most of the way.
