The Illinois State Redbirds and the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers meet in college basketball action from the Joseph Gentile Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Illinois State Redbirds will look to build off of a 91-62 win over Chicago State last time out to improve to 3-3 on the year. DJ Horne led the Redbirds with 22 points on 6 of 12 shooting with 4 threes while Josiah Strong added 17 points with 5 threes, 6 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists. Dedric Boyd added 13 points with 4 threes while Antonio Reeves and Dusan Mahorcic each had 11 points to cap off the scoring in double figures for Illinois State in the win with Mahorcic shooting a perfect 5 of 5 from the field while Reeves added 3 threes and 4 assists. Howard Fleming Jr. also had a team-high 9 rebounds while Abdou Ndiaye added 4 points and 4 blocks. Strong leads Illinois State in scoring and assists with an average of 14 points and 5 assists while Mahorcic leads the Redbirds in rebounding with 8.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Illinois State is averaging 91.3 points on 52.4% shooting from the field, 38.1% from 3-point range and 63.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 82.3 points on 43.3% shooting from the field and 28.9% from 3-point range this season.
The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers will look to build off of a 92-55 win over subdivision St. Francis last time out. Baylor Hebb and Tom Welch each had 17 points with Welch shooting 5 of 7 with a pair of threes while Hebb shot 6 of 9 with a pair of threes and a team-high 4 assists. Jacob Hutson added 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting with a pair of threes while Aher Uguak added 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting and Tate Hall added 10 points with a pair of threes to finish off the scoring in double figures for the Ramblers in the winning effort. Paxson Wojcik added a team-high 6 rebounds as well in the win for the Ramblers. Cameron Krutwig didn’t play, but still leads Loyola-Chicago in scoring and rebounding with an average of 17 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while Braden Norris leads the Ramblers in assists with 3 helpers per game this season. As a team, Loyola-Chicago is averaging 78.2 points on 43% shooting from the field, 41.8% from behind the arc and 65.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 62 points on 41.6% shooting from the field and 35.7% from 3-point range this season.
Illinois State is 5-16 ATS in their last 21 road games and 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games following a win while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record. Loyola-Chicago is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Sunday games while the over is 11-1 in their last 12 games overall. The underdog is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and the road team is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings between these two teams.
I’ll concede that Illinois State hasn’t had a ton of quality wins and Loyola-Chicago’s been a moneymaker for us in recent years. However, Loyola-Chicago’s struggled in their last couple of games and while Richmond and Wisconsin are steps up in competition, the results don’t necessarily make Illinois State this much worse off than the Ramblers and while the numbers for the Redbirds may be a bit inflated from a 177 point outing against a subdivision opponent earlier this season, the Redbiards have shown that they can score enough to keep themselves in games. I just think this is a case of too many points, so I’ll take them and Illinois State for the cover here.
