Michigan State comes in here at 6-2 so far. The Spartans have lost their last two games to Northwestern and Wisconsin. As for Minnesota, they’re 8-1 this year. Michigan State came out of the gate strong this year with six consecutive wins. Those victories came over Eastern Michigan, Notre Dame, Duke, Detroit, Western Michigan and Oakland. Since then however, it’s been consecutive losses 79-65 to Northwestern and 85-76 to Wisconsin.
In the loss to the Badgers, Michigan State’s Joey Hauser posted 27 points with seven rebounds and two assists. The only other Spartans player in double-digits there was Aaron Henry with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Thomas Kithier chipped in eight points with five rebounds in 18 minutes on the court.
Over on the Minnesota side, they kicked off the year with six straight wins as well, beating Green Bay, LMU (twice), North Dakota, Boston College and UMKC. After a 92-65 loss to Illinois, the Gophers have taken out Saint Louis 90-82 and Iowa 102-95 in their last pair.
In the big win over the Hawkeyes, Minnesota’s top scorer was Marcus Carr with 30 points, eight assists and three rebounds. Brandon Johnson added 26 points with nine rebounds and one assist, and Liam Robbins finished on 18 points with five rebounds.
The Gophers are 2-5-2 ATS in their last nine after an ATS win and 3-7-2 ATS in their last 12 after a straight-up win. The over is 5-0 in Minnesota’s last five overall and 4-0 in their last four home games.
Meanwhile, Michigan State is 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. The Spartans are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Monday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on Minnesota here. The Gophers have had a few close games and a couple tepid offensive performances this season (like 67-64 in one of the LMU games). That said, Minnesota is scoring well recently, with 85 or more points in four of their last five games. The Gophers were flat against a good Illini team a couple weeks back, but I like Minnesota to play with more energy and efficiency here—enough to eke out a cover/win at least. Should be a fun matchup to watch.
