Northwestern opened up the year with wins over AR-Pine Bluff and Chicago State, but then ran into trouble against a tricky Pitt team in a 71-70 loss. Since then it’s been four victories for the Wildcats. Those have come 100-48 over Quincy, 79-65 over Michigan State, 74-67 over Indiana and 71-70 over Ohio State.
In the win over the Buckeyes, Northwestern’s Miller Kopp led the way on 23 points, three assists and two rebounds. Boo Buie added 14 points with five assists and one board, while Pete Nance also finished in double-figures with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Wildcats.
Over on the Hawkeyes’ side, they came out of the gate at 6-0 with wins over NC Central, Southern U, Western Illinois, North Carolina, Iowa State and Northern Illinois. In this 1-2 stretch over their last three outings, Iowa has a 70-55 win over Purdue in between losses to Gonzaga 99-88 and Minnesota 102-95.
In the loss to the Gophers, Iowa’s top scorer was Luka Garza, doubling up on 32 points, 17 rebounds and one assist. CJ Fredrick posted 23 points with two boards and two assists, and Joe Wieskamp added 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
The Hawkeyes are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games after an ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five Tuesday games. Iowa is 20-8-3 ATS in their last 31 overall and 20-4-2 ATS in their last 26 home games.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall and 8-21-1 ATS in their last 30 after an ATS win. The over is 9-4 in Northwestern’s last 13 overall and the under is 25-11-2 in their last 38 after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m sticking with Northwestern. Iowa has faced some tough competition over the last three games and come away with a pair of double-digit losses to Gonzaga and Minnesota. Northwestern has had better luck in their last two matchups against ranked teams, drilling Michigan State by 14 and eking out a one-point win over the Buckeyes. This should be a pretty great matchup and I expect it to be close most of the way. I like Northwestern’s offense a little better though, and I think the Wildcats can bang out a cover in this one.
