The Houston Cougars and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane meet in AAC college basketball action from the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Tuesday night.
The Houston Cougars will look to remain unbeaten after improving to 7-0 with a 63-54 win over UCF last time out. Marcus Sasser led Houston with 19 points on 6 of 14 shooting with 4 threes and 5 rebounds while Caleb Mills chipped in 12 points with a pair of steals and Dejon Jarreau added 10 points with a team-high 5 assists to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for Houston in the winning effort. Quentin Grimes added 9 points with 5 rebounds and 3 steals as well, but he still leads Houston in scoring with an average of 18.4 points per game while Jarreau leads the Cougars in assists with 3.7 assists per game and Justin Gorham leads the Cougars in rebounding with 7.7 boards per game this season. As a team, Houston is averaging 75 points on 41.7% shooting from the field, 31.9% from 3-point range and 74.7% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 54.6 points on 36.7% shooting from the field and 21.8% from 3-point range this season.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will look to add to their current three-game winning streak after a 102-45 win over subdivision Southwest Christian University last time out. Keshawn Williams led the Golden Hurricane with 20 points on a perfect 8 of 8 shooting with a pair of threes, 6 rebounds and a team-high 9 assists while Brandon Rachal added 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Emmanuel Ugboh added 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting to finish off the scoring in double figures for Tulsa in the win while Keyshawn Embery-Simpson and Darien Jackson each had 9 points with Embery-Simpson adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Jackson had 4 boards and 3 assists. Rachal leads the Golden Hurricane in scoring and rebounding with an average of 13.7 points and 7 rebounds per game this season while Elijah Joiner leads Tulsa in assists with 4.2 helpers per game this season. As a team, Tulsa is averaging 72.4 points on 46.7% shooting from the field, 30.8% from 3-point range and 58.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 60.1 points on 36.8% shooting from the field and 32.8% from 3-point range this season.
Houston is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 4-1 ATS in their alst 5 games following a win while the under is 18-5 in their last 23 games overall. Tulsa is 9-4 in their last 13 home games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games against a team with a winning road record while the under is 27-12 in their last 39 games overall.
I think a case could be made for either side as Houston is one of the best teams in the country and the Cougars have earned that regard, while Tulsa is a battler and can go toe-to-toe with any team on any given night. With that said, this has all the feels of a game where the first to 60 wins and is the definition of a defensive struggle. I’ll side with the under even with the low total.
