The North Carolina Tar Heels and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets meet Wednesday in college basketball action from McCamish Pavilion.
North Carolina comes into this one at 5-3 so far. The Tar Heels had consecutive wins going versus NC Central and Kentucky but lost in their last game to NC State. As for Georgia Tech, they’re sitting at 4-3 this year. The Yellow Jackets have won consecutive games versus Florida A&M and Delaware State. North Carolina opened up the year at 3-0, taking out Charleston, UNLV and Stanford. losses to Texas and Iowa came after that, but UNC bounced back with wins over NC Central and Kentucky. The Tar Heels’ last outing was a tough 79-76 loss to North Carolina State.
In the loss to the Wolfpack, North Carolina’s top scorer was Armando Bacot with 16 points and six rebounds. Both Rhonda John-Davis and Caleb Love added 11 points apiece, combining for seven rebounds and seven assists. Garrison Brooks chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds as well.
Over on the Georgia Tech side, it’s been a bumpy season so far. The Yellow Jackets went 2-3 in their first five games, beating Kentucky and Nebraska while otherwise falling to Georgia State, Mercer and Florida State. Since then it’s been wins over Florida A&M and Delaware State, however.
In the 97-69 win over the Hornets, Georgia Tech’s Jose Alvarado led the way on 29 points with five assists and two rebounds. Moses Wright posted 16 points with four rebounds and three assists, while Khalid Moore managed 11 points with three rebounds and one assist in 22 minutes on the court.
The Yellow Jackets are 36-14-1 ATS in their last 51 Wednesday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. Georgia Tech is 1-4 ATS in their last five home games and the over is 4-1-1 in their last six home games.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five road games versus a team with a winning home record. The under is 8-2 in North Carolina’s last 10 overall and the under is 5-2 in their last seven home games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with North Carolina. The Tar Heels have had a few rough outings this season and probably should have beaten NC State in their last game. UNC shot just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in that one and coughed up 18 turnovers despite holding the edge in team rebounds (45-34) and assists (15-10). Georgia Tech has a solid offense themselves, but they’ve struggled a bit against the more talented teams this year. I think the Jackets can hang around initially, but I like the Tar Heels to bang out a cover in a bounce-back game.
