The Butler Bulldogs and the Providence Friars meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Alumni Hall.
Butler enters this one at 2-3 so far. After a three-game losing streak, the Bulldogs got a win in their last outing versus Providence on December 23. As for the Friars, they’re 6-3 this season. After their loss to the Bulldogs, Providence got a tense double-overtime win over DePaul on Sunday. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Butler managed a 66-62 win over Western Michigan in their opener, but then lost their next three games. Those defeats came 85-66 to Villanova, 68-60 to Indiana and 76-73 to Southern Illinois. In their last outing, the Bulldogs got a win 70-64 over Providence.
In the December 23 victory, Butler’s JaKobe Coles led the way with 14 points and three rebounds in 14 minutes of action. Both Bryce Golden and Jair Bolden added 11 points apiece, while combining for three assists and nine rebounds. Chuck Harris and Bryce Nze each chipped in 10 points as well.
Over on the Providence side, they kicked off the season at 2-2 with losses to Alabama and Indiana alongside wins over Davidson and Fairfield. The Friars have gone 4-1 in the five games since, with the loss to Butler the only blemish among wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, TCU, Seton Hall and DePaul.
In the 2OT win over the Demons, Providence’s David Duke led the team on 24 points with five rebounds and six assists. AJ Reeves added 22 points with five rebounds and two assists, while Nate Watson managed 18 points with 14 rebounds in 43 minutes on the court.
Providence is 0-4 ATS in their last four home games and 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall. The Friars are 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss and the over is 6-0 in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 versus a team with a winning straight-up record. The over is 5-1 in Butler’s last six overall and 4-1 in the last five Wednesday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Providence here. The last matchup between these teams on December 23 was pretty tight; Butler held a 31-30 lead at halftime and hung on for a six-point win. The Bulldogs held the edge in rebounds (37-32) and turnovers (10-12) while also shooting 45.6 percent from the field to Providence’s 41.3 percent. The Friars are normally a better scoring team than that, and I like them to notch an improved effort here. Should be a competitive game again, but I think Providence can get a revenge cover.
