The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks and the Idaho Vandals meet Thursday in college basketball action from the Kibbie Dome.
Northern Arizona enters this one at 1-6 overall. The Lumberjacks managed a win over Denver on December 22 but fell to Gonzaga in their last outing. As for Idaho, they’re 0-5 this year. The Vandals have fallen to CSU Bakersfield and Utah in their last two games. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Northern Arizona opened up the season with five straight losses, falling to Arizona, UC Riverside, Colorado State, Eastern Washington and Texas State in succession. The Lumberjacks finally got a win 68-65 over Denver in game six, but then fell 88-58 to Gonzaga on Monday.
In the loss to the Bulldogs, Northern Arizona’s lead scorer was Cameron Shelton with 20 points, nine rebounds and one assist. Jay Green was the only other Lumberjacks player in double-figures there, racking up 12 points and three rebounds in 25 minutes on the court.
Over on the Vandals’ side, it’s been five games of futility so far this season. Idaho fell twice to Sacramento State in their first two games, then logged a 61-58 loss to Washington State. Since then it’s been two more losses for the Vandals, 76-66 to CSU Bakersfield and 79-41 to Utah.
In the loss to the Utes, Idaho’s top scorer was Scott Blakney with 13 points and two rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Damen Thacker was the only other Vandals player in double-digit points there with 10, adding four rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
The Vandals are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 1-6 ATS in the last seven home games. Idaho is 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 Thursday games and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five home games.
Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss. The under is 9-3 in Northern Arizona’s last 12 overall and 5-1 in the last six road games.
PICK: I’m going to go with Northern Arizona here. That said, there’s not much to like about a matchup featuring teams that are a combined 1-11. Both these teams are coming off blowout losses to good squads, and both have shown very little scoring success this season. Northern Arizona hasn’t scored more than 68 points; Idaho has been at 66 or fewer every game. This should be a competitive matchup, but I like the Lumberjacks offense a little better on a cover.
