The Campbell Fighting Camels and the Winthrop Eagles meet Thursday in college basketball action from Winthrop Coliseum.
Campbell enters this one at 4-4 on the season. As for Winthrop, they’re currently sitting at 6-0 overall. This will be a rematch of Wednesday’s matchup featuring these teams. In that game, the Eagles managed a tense one-point win. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Campbell opened up the season with a four-game winning streak, taking out St. Andrews, Jacksonville, New Orleans and Florida National. It’s been a rough ride for the Camels since, as they lost their next three games 66-56 to Elon, 69-50 to NC State and 78-59 to UNCW.
In the Wednesday game, Campbell nearly pulled off the upset, but ended up falling 84-83. Leading the Camels in scoring was Jordan Whitfield with 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Austin McCullough came off the bench to go 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and notch 16 points with five boards.
Over on the Winthrop side, they immediately started racking up Ws as soon as the season began. The Eagles managed to take out UNC Greensboro 75-67 in the opener, then dispatched Little Rock 80-75, USC Upstate 95-77 and 107-77, then took out Furman 87-71.
In Wednesday’s near-disastrous one-point win, Winthrop gave up 50 points in the second half and barely hung on. Leading the Eagles in scoring there was Chandler Vaudrin with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Charles Falden chipped in 16 points and six rebounds as well.
The over is 4-0 in Winthrop’s last four Thursday games and 10-2 in their last 12 games as a favorite. The Eagles are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall and 2-6 ATS in their last eight as a home favorite.
Meanwhile, the under is 4-0 in the Camels’ last four Thursday games and 5-3-1 in the last nine as a road underdog. Campbell is 6-0 ATS in their last six games as an underdog of 13.0 or greater and the under is 3-2-1 in their last six games as an underdog.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Winthrop again. Campbell notched some pretty solid offensive performances in their first four games against overmatched competition, but the Camels have stalled out on the scoreboard recently with a string of three sub-60-point outings heading into the Wednesday matchup. The Camels bucked the trend there with 83 points, but I don’t think it’ll become a habit. Winthrop came right out of the gate with five straight games of 75 points or more. Wednesday’s game was certainly not as dominant for Winthrop as most people thought, but I think the spread will thin out enough in this matchup so the Eagles have a good shot.
