Troy kicked off the year at just 1-3, beating Western Carolina and falling to UNCW, Texas Tech and UAB. Since then it’s been a 4-1 stretch for the Trojans, with a loss to Auburn mixed in with wins over North Alabama, Central Baptist, Samford and Carver during that run of outings.
In the 88-35 blowout win over Carver, Troy’s leading contributor was Nick Stampley with 16 points, 17 rebounds and two assists in a double-double. Zay Williams managed 15 points with six rebounds and three assists, while Kam Woods finished on 13 points, three rebounds and one assist.
Over on the Appalachian State side, they kicked off the year at 4-1, falling to Bowling Green while taking out SC State, Carver, NC Wesleyan and Charlotte. The Mountaineers are 2-2 since then, with wins over Greensboro and CIU sandwiched between losses to Tennessee and Auburn.
In the 67-53 loss to Auburn, Appalachian State’s leading scorer was Michael Almonacy with 15 points and two rebounds. No other Mountaineers player finished in double-figures for the tone, but Adrian Delph got close on nine points and one assist in 31 minutes of action.
Appalachian State is 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 Friday games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games overall. The Mountaineers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four versus a team with a winning straight-up record and the under is 5-2 in their last seven Friday games.
Meanwhile, Troy is 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 overall. The Trojans are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine Friday games and the under is 7-1 in their last eight overall.
PICK: I’m going to go with Appalachian State. You could probably make a good case either way in this one, however. The Trojans have had a good run over their last five games, but they’ve scored more than 66 points just twice this season—most recently against a grossly overmatched Carver team. Appalachian State has been pretty choppy themselves and wilt against big-time competition, but they’ve scored well in favorable matchups. I think the Mountaineers have another one here.
