Rider opened up the season with consecutive losses, falling to Syracuse and St. John’s. The Broncs got their lone win 82-64 over Manhattan, then lost the next four games. Those defeats came courtesy of Manhattan, Iona twice, then NJIT on December 23 in Rider’s most recent outing.
In the loss to the Highlanders, Rider’s only double-digit scoring contributor was Dontrell McQuarter with 10 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Smalls managed nine points with two rebounds in 10 minutes of play, and Allen Powell chipped in eight points in 13 minutes on the court.
Over on the Fairfield side, they haven’t had much luck this year either. The Stags kicked off the season with five straight losses to Providence, Hartford, Stony Brook, Hartford again and Iona. Fairfield Beat Iona on December 12 but then lost their next trio to Niagara twice and Fairleigh Dickinson.
In the loss to the Knights, Fairfield’s top scorer was Jake Wojcik with 12 points and two assists. Taj Benning and Jalen Leach each managed 11 points apiece, combining for three assists and five rebounds as well. Chris Maidoh chipped in four points with nine rebounds in 13 minutes as well.
Fairfield is 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games and 0-4 ATS in their last four versus a team with a losing straight-up record. The Stags are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall and the under is 43-12 in their last 55 overall.
Meanwhile, Rider is 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall and 34-16-2 ATS in their last 52 road games versus a team with a losing home record. The under is 21-7 in the Broncs’ last 28 overall and 12-5 in their last 17 road games.
PICK: I’m going to lean Rider, but probably staying away from this one. The Broncs have put up several dud scoring outings but they can put up the points when the matchup is right; Rider has three games with 77 or more this season. As for Fairfield, they haven’t hit 70 points in any game so far. The good news is that we should have a relatively higher-scoring game here and it should be a competitive outing on both sides.
