The Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners and the Long Beach State Beach meet Friday in college basketball action from Walter Pyramid.
CSU Bakersfield comes into this one at 4-3 so far. The Roadrunners fell to Stanford in their December 21 game, but got a win over Pepperdine in their last outing. As for Long Beach State, they’re 1-2 this year. The Beach last played on December 10 in a loss to San Francisco. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Cal State Bakersfield kicked off the year with a loss to Santa Clara, but then got their first win over Bethesda before a loss to Arizona. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run for the Roadrunners, falling to Stanford while otherwise beating Idaho, St. Katherine and Pepperdine.
In the 79-51 win over the Waves, Cal State Bakersfield’s top scorer was De’onte Buckingham with 20 points, eight rebounds and one assist. Ronne Readus notched a double-double on 14 points, 16 rebounds and one assist, while Czar Perry chipped in 10 points with five assists.
Over on the Long Beach State side, it’s been tough playing games this season. The Beach opened up with a loss 85-61 to LMU, but then managed a win over Seattle 80-75 in game two. Long Beach State took a 107-62 loss to San Francisco way back on December 10 and hasn’t been able to play a game since.
In the loss to the Dons, Long Beach State’s leading contributor was Joe Hampton with nine points and two rebounds. Chance Hunter added eight points with eight rebounds and one assist, while both Jadon Jones and Trever Irish notched eight points apiece with a combined five rebounds.
Long Beach State is 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games versos a team with a losing road record. The Beach are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six versus a team with a winning straight-up record and the over is 5-1 in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Friday games and 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 overall. The under is 4-0 in Cal State Bakersfield’s last four Friday games and 5-1 in their last six road games.
PICK: I’m going with Cal State Bakersfield here, but probably staying away in reality. It’s tough to know what to expect from the Beach after such a long layoff, but the Roadrunners’ developed chemistry over the past few weeks should give them an advantage. CSUB has notched a few dud scoring outings like 50 versus Stanford and 47 versus Santa Clara, but I think they’ve got enough offense to be competitive here and bang out a cover.
