The George Mason Patriots and the Dayton Flyers meet Saturday in college basketball action from UD Arena.
George Mason enters this game at 5-2 so far. The Patriots lost to Norfolk State on December 26 but bounced back with a win over UMass in their last game. As for the Flyers, they’re 4-2 this season. Dayton had a three-game win streak broken by La Salle in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
George Mason came into the year at 4-1 in their first quintet, beating Queens NC, falling to Belmont, then taking out Howard, VMI and Towson in succession. After a loss to Norfolk State 68-65, the Patriots beat UMass 93-92 in their most recent game on Wednesday.
In the win over the Minutemen, George Mason’s Jordan Miller led the way on 26 points with eight rebounds and five assists. Both Jamal Hartwell and Tyler Kolek notched 19 points apiece, combining for two assists and seven rebounds as well.
Over on the Flyers’ side, they opened the year with a win over Eastern Illinois, then lost to SMU. After that it was three straight wins for Dayton, as they took out Northern Kentucky, Mississippi State and Mississippi. The Flyers lost 67-65 to La Salle in their last outing on Wednesday.
In the loss to the Explorers, Dayton’s top scorer was Mustapha Amzil with 22 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Crutcher was the only other Flyers player in double-figures with 19 points, six rebounds and two assists, but Ibi Watson chipped in nine points with two boards and one assist.
Dayton is 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games as a home favorite of 7.0-12.5 and the under is 6-2 in their last eight overall. The under is 5-2 in the Flyers’ last seven home games and the over is 8-3 in their last 11 at home versus a team with a winning road record.
Meanwhile, the Patriots are 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win and 2-7 ATS in their last nine Saturday games. The over is 5-2 in George Mason’s last seven Saturday games and 4-1 in their last five road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with George Mason in this one. The Patriots opened up with a few tepid scoring outings, logging 68 or fewer in three of their first four games. Since then it’s been better, however; George Mason has hit 70 points in three of their last five outings. Dayton is more of a lower-scoring defensive team this season; they’ve managed more than 66 points just once this year. I think the Flyers will hang around for a while but George Mason should pull away late.
