The Northern Iowa Panthers and the Evansville Aces meet in college basketball action from the Ford Center on Saturday.
The Northern Iowa Panthers will look to build on their second win of the season coming in the form of an 85-75 win over Missouri State last time out. The Panthers continue to live life without their top two scorers as AJ Green is out for the season with a hip injury while Trae Berhow still hasn’t been cleared from the COVID protocols and doesn’t have an expected return date as of yet. That leaves Bowen Born as UNI’s active leading scorer with 11.6 PPG with 2.3 APG while Austin Phyfe has 10.4 PPG, 2.3 APG and 5.1 RPG to lead the active Panthers on the glass. Noah Carter also has 9.9 PPG for the Panthers this year as well. As a team, Northern Iowa is averaging 76 points on 44.7% shooting from the field, 36.1% from 3-point range and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 75.1 points on 44.5% shooting from the field and 30.5% from 3-point range this season.
The Evansville Aces will look to build on an 84-72 win over Southern Illinois in their last matchup to improve to 3-5 overall on the year. Samari Curtis leads Evansville in scoring with 14.3 PPG while Noah Frederking is right behind with 14 PPG amd Shamar Givance has 13.3 PPG as well as 4.4 RPG and a team-high 3.4 APG this season. Jawaun Newton also has 12.6 PPG to give Evansville a total of four double-digit scorers on the year. Jax Levitch also has a team-high 6.5 RPG for the Aces this season. As a team, Evansville is averaging 66.3 points on 41.1% shooting from the field, 38.8% from 3-point range and 69.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 71.4 points on 47.3% shooting from the field and 41.5% from 3-point range this season.
Northern Iowa is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games while the over is 17-5 in their last 22 games following a win. Evansville is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record and 6-17-3 ATS in their last 26 home games while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games overall. The favorite is 8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
I’m still trying to get myself to being able to lay points with Northern Iowa on the road and I just can’t do it. As bad as Evansville has been in the past, we’re still getting them at home, with a couple of buckets against a Northern Iowa team still adjusting to life without their two best players that accounted for almost half of the team’s average scoring. Evansville has four double-digit scorers and is at full strength and I just think getting points with them at home is the play here.
