The Bears opened up the season on a nice six-game win streak. Those victories came courtesy of North Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia Tech, CIU, Southern Wesleyan and Georgia Southern. Since then it’s been a win over Kennesaw State sandwiched between losses to Georgia State and Wofford.
In the 78-65 loss to the Terriers, Mercer’s Ross Cummings led the team on 21 points with six rebounds and four assists. Leon Ayers added 15 points with six rebounds and three assists, while Felipe Haase also finished in double-digits on 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Over on the Furman side, they kicked off the season with four straight wins per Tusculum, USC Upstate, Southern Wesleyan and Charleston. The Paladins went 1-3 in the four games after with losses to Cincinnati, Alabama and Winthrop before taking out SC State and Chattanooga in their last pair.
In the 77-73 win over the Mocs, Furman’s Mike Bothwell led the way on 22 points with seven rebounds and two assists. Jalen Slawson added 16 points with three rebounds and one assist, and Noah Gurley managed 13 points with five boards and three assists in 31 minutes of play.
Furman is 2-6 ATS in their last eight games versus a team with a winning straight-up record and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 at home versus a team with a road winning percentage greater than .600. The over is 5-0 in the Paladins’ last five overall and the under is 12-5 in their last 17 at home versus a team with a winning road record.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 6-14 ATS in their last 20 after a straight-up loss. Mercer is 5-13 ATS in the last 18 Saturday games and 5-13 ATS in the last 18 after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Furman. This should be a pretty great matchup, though. Mercer has notched some nice offensive performances this season, and they’ve scored 77 or more in eight of nine games so far. The Paladins have also been solid on the scoreboard with 71 or more in all 10 of their games. I like this one to be a high-scoring affair with plenty of competition from both sides. Furman should be able to keep a nice offensive pace here and cover. It’ll be a good game.
