The Duquesne Dukes and the George Washington Colonials meet in college basketball action from the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Duquesne Dukes come into this one rested having not played in exactly one month due to COVID issues within the program, sitting at 1-1 on the year with their last result being an 81-68 win over UNC-Greensboro. Tavian Dunn-Martin leads the Dukes with 16 points per contest through the first two games while Marcus Weathers is right behind with 15 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Sincere Carry is 3rd with 13.5 points and a team-high 4.5 assists per game while Michael Hughes has 10.5 points and a team-high 9 rebounds per game through two games so far this season. As a team, Duquesne is averaging 73.5 points on 42% shooting from the field, 28.3% from behind the arc and 75.5% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72 points on 49.1% shooting from the field and 34.3% from 3-point range this season.
The George Washington Colonials are in need of a win, but GW took a step in the right direction opening conference play with a 71-47 beatdown of Fordham, improving the Colonials record to 2-6 on the year. It’s mostly a 2-3 man show for the Colonials, with James Bishop leading George Washington with 20 PPG as well as a team-high 6.4 APG and 3.8 RPG this season. Jamison Battle is the only other double-digit scorer for GW this season, posting 17.3 PPG and 6 RPG but Matthew Moyer isn’t far behind from joining the pair, posting 9.8 PPG and a team-high 9.4 RPG through eight games so far this season. As a team, George Washington is averaging 75 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 36.7% from behind the arc and 73.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.4 points on 43.1% shooting from the field and 33% from 3-point range this season.
Duquesne is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record whle the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. George Washington is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 home games.
I said to myself before the line came out that when it came to this game, if I was getting anything more than a couple of baskets, I’d take the points because you can make the case for either side and that’s what we have here. Duquesne may be the better team, but I’m not laying almost double digits on the road with a team that hasn’t played in a month. George Washington isn’t a world beater by any means, but they got a confidence building win over Fordham and have been seeing regular game action while Duquesne’s been forced to sit on the sidelines. I just don’t see the logic for this big of a number. Give me George Washington and the points here.
