The Lafayette Leopards and the Lehigh Mountain Hawks meet Saturday in college basketball action from Stabler Arena.
This will be Lafayette’s first action of the 2020-21 college basketball season. The Leopards went 19-12 overall last season with a 10-8 record in Patriot League play. As for Lehigh, they’ll be taking the court for the first time this year as well. The Mountain Hawks went 11-21 overall last year with a 7-11 mark in the Patriot League. Lafayette posted a respectable 19-12 mark overall last year, but their 10-8 Patriot League record left the team in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. The Leopards closed out the regular season on a 3-2 run and took out Army in the Patriot League Tournament before losing to Colgate in the semifinals.
Lafayette will be returning three starters from last year’s squad, so the team should have a little chemistry right away in 2020-21. The bad news is that star player Alex Petrie will be sitting out the season due to virus concerns after missing all of last season with an undisclosed illness as well. Justin Jaworski will be back on the court after a knee issue last year however, so it’s not all grey skies for the Leopards.
Over on the Mountain Hawks’ side, they managed a pretty disappointing 11-21 record last year, going 7-11 in the Patriot League. Lehigh was left in a tie for second-to-last place in the conference standings with that mark. Despite a win over Loyola MD in the conference tournament, Lehigh fell to Colgate in the quarterfinals.
On to 2020-21, and Lehigh brings back three of five starters from last year as well. We’ll see some new faces in key spots, and guys like PG Marques Wilson should be stepping into expanded roles this year. Young talent like Jalin Sinclair and Jake Betlow should give the Hawks a lift as well.
Lehigh is 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games and 5-11 ATS in their last 16 overall. The over is 23-8 in the Mountain Hawks’ last 31 as a favorite and the under is 8-2 in their last 10 as an underdog.
Meanwhile, the Leopards are 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 4-1 in Lafayette’s last five Saturday games and 8-2 in their last 10 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Lafayette here. It’s tough to get a feel for what either of these teams will look like until we see them on the floor in 2021, however. That said, the Leopards are returning some sizable contributors, and even without Petrie last year the team still won 19 games. With a healthy team and some older, more experienced players taking on leadership roles, I like the Leopards to open with a solid effort and bag a cover/win here.
