Sam Houston State opened up the year with a three-game losing streak versus SMU, Texas Tech and Boise State, but then bagged wins in their next three games. After two more losses, the Bearkats have won their last three straight versus Rice, UT Rio Grande Valley and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In the win over the Crusaders, Sam Houston State’s top scorer was Javion May with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jarren Cook added 16 points with four rebounds in 22 minutes, and Bryce Monroe posted 15 points with three assists and two rebounds for the Bearkats.
Over on the Nicholls State side, they started out the year with wins over UC Davis and Idaho State, but haven’t gotten another W since. The Colonels have lost each of their last four, dropping to Santa Clara, California, Saint Mary’s and LSU during that time.
In the loss to LSU, Nicholls State’s top scorer was Damien Sears with 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Jeremiah Buford notched 14 points with five assists and three rebounds, and Jitarious Gordon was also in double-figures on 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Colonels are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 after a straight-up loss and the under is 4-1 in their last five overall. The over is 7-2 in Nicholls State’s last nine home games and 6-1-1 in their last eight Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Bearkats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games. The under is 4-0 in Sam Houston State’s last four Saturday games and 5-0-1 in their last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Sam Houston State here. Nicholls State has had a couple of pretty solid outings (like 80 points versus LSU and 101 versus UC Davis) but for the most part they’ve stalled out on offense. The Colonels have managed 57 or fewer points in three of their last four games. Sam Houston State hasn’t exactly been a scoring powerhouse themselves, but they should have enough gas to keep the pace here and bag a cover.
