Elon comes into this game at 3-1 so far. The Phoenix are coming off a seven-point loss to UNC Greensboro in their last outing. As for Northeastern, they’re 1-5 this year. The Huskies are riding a four-game losing streak, most recently falling to West Virginia on December 29. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Elon came out of the gate strong this season with wins in their first three appearances. The Phoenix opened up with an 82-52 win over NC Wesleyan, then eked by High Point 76-75 before dispatching Campbell 66-56. Elon fell to UNC Greensboro 71-64 in their last game, however.
In the loss to the Spartans, Elon’s top scorer was Hunter Woods on 19 points with eight rebounds and one assist. Ikenna Ndugba added 15 points with six boards and three assists, while Hunter McIntosh chipped in nine points, two rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of play.
Over on the Northeastern side, it’s been a rough year so far. The Huskies opened with a loss to UMass, but then beat the Minutemen 78-75 in game two. Since then it’s been four straight losses for Northeastern: 62-56 to Syracuse, 66-62 to Old Dominion, 76-58 to Georgia and 73-51 to West Virginia.
In the loss to the Mountaineers, Northeastern’s top contributor was Quirin Emanga with 13 points and three boards in 19 minutes. The only other Huskies player to finish in double-figures there was Tyson Walker with 10 points, three assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes on the court.
Northeastern is 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven Saturday games. The under is 4-0 in the Huskies’ last four overall and 16-7-1 in their last 24 home games.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Elon is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Saturday games and the over is 17-8 in their last 25 overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on Northeastern here. This one’s tough to call though; it’s been a while since we’ve seen Elon on the court. In any case, the Phoenix have scored just 130 combined points across their last pair. That’s good news for the Huskies, who seem to be able to hang around in lower-scoring games better this year (62-56 versus Syracuse, 66-62 versus Old Dominion, etc). This will probably be a physical, ball-control type game, and in that context I think Northeastern can eke out a cover.
