Iowa kicked off the year on a six-game winning streak, taking out NC Central, Southern U, Western Illinois, UNC, Iowa State and Northern Illinois in succession. After a 99-88 loss to Gonzaga, the Hawkeyes beat Purdue then fell to Minnesota 102-95. In their last game, Iowa beat Northwestern 87-72.
In the December 29 win over the Wildcats, Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon led the team on 24 points, five rebounds and five assists. CJ Fredrick added 19 points with three boards and one assist, and Luka Garza posted 18 points with six boards and one assist in 34 minutes of action.
Over on the Rutgers side, they’ve looked pretty solid this year. The Knights opened with six straight wins over Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Syracuse, Maryland and Illinois. After losing to Ohio State 80-68, Rutgers took out Purdue 81-76 in their last game.
In the win over the Boilermakers, Rutgers’ top contributor was Montez Mathis with 25 points, five rebounds and one assist. Geo Baker managed 19 points with six rebounds and four assists, and Jacob Young had 13 points with four assists in 35 minutes on the court.
Rutgers is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games and 3-0-1 ATS in their last four home games. The Knights are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six overall and the over is 6-1 in their last seven home games.
Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes are 21-8-3 ATS in their last 32 games overall and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games. The over is 10-2 in Iowa’s last 12 overall and 6-2 in their last eight road games.
PICK: I’m going to take Rutgers, but realistically you could flip a coin here. These are both great teams, and this should be one of the better matchups of the weekend’s college basketball action. In any case, Rutgers has scored quite well this year, with 70 or more points in seven of eight games—the outlier being 68 against Ohio State. Iowa has hit 70 or more in all 10 of their games, so this one figures to be a high-flying, high-scoring affair. If both offenses are clicking this matchup should be close the whole way, but I like Rutgers to eke out a cover. Don’t miss this one.
