The Chattanooga Mocs and the VMI Keydets meet Saturday in college basketball action from Cameron Hall.
Chattanooga enters this one at 9-1 so far. The Mocs kicked off the year with a nine-game win streak but lost to Furman on Wednesday. As for VMI, they’re sitting at 5-5 this season. The Keydets have lost three straight to Gardner-Webb, George Mason and Samford. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Chattanooga opened the season on a great run, winning their first nine games. The Mocs dispatched Lander, Tennessee Tech, Northern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Bellarmine, North Georgia, UNC Asheville, UAB and Tennessee State in that span but fell to Furman 77-73 on Wednesday.
In the loss to the Paladins, Chattanooga’s David Jean-Baptiste led the way on 18 points, three rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. KC Hankton was the only other Mocs player in double-figures there, notching 17 points with three boards. Malachi Smith added 10 rebounds with eight points and three assists as well.
Over on the Keydets’ side, it’s been a mixed bag and a .500 record this year. VMI kicked off at 2-2 with losses to Penn State and Virginia Tech with wins over St. Andrews and Longwood. After three straight wins, VMI lost their next three games versus Gardner-Webb, George Mason and Samford.
In the loss to the Bulldogs, VMI’s leading scorer was Greg Parham with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kamdyn Curfman added 17 points with five assists and one board, and Trey Bonham pitched in with 15 points, one rebound and one assist in 25 minutes.
The Keydets are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 after a straight-up loss. The under is 4-1 in VMI’s last five overall and the over is 19-7 in their last 26 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Mocs are 5-1 ATS in their last six Saturday games and 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 overall. Chattanooga is 21-6 ATS in their last 27 road games and the over is 6-1 in their last seven after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to go with VMI. Sure, Chattanooga was quite impressive opening up the season with that nine-game win streak. Recently they notched a lot of very close escapes, however: 69-66 over UNC Asheville, 66-63 over Tennessee State, 69-66 over UAB, etc. VMI has been scoring pretty well this season, with 71 or more in five of their last six games. I like the Keydets offense well enough to think they’ll get a good rhythm going and cover here.
