Green Bay opened the season on quite a skid. The Phoenix recorded losses to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Eastern Illinois and Marquette in their first four games. After that it was four more losses to Milwaukee twice, and Wright State two times as well.
In Friday’s game, Green Bay had a 40-39 halftime lead but couldn’t get it done, losing 84-77 to the Penguins. Leading the Phoenix in scoring there was PJ Pipes with 21 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Amari Davis added 18 points with two assists and one rebound as well.
Over on the Youngstown State side, they kicked off the year with three straight wins, taking out Point Park, Binghamton and WVU Tech. The Penguins then split a pair of games with Northern Kentucky 79-64 (loss) and 70-60 (win). After that it was two more losses to Cleveland State.
In the Friday victory, Youngstown State’s top scorer was Naz Bohannon, who doubled up on 32 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Garrett Covington notched 13 points with four boards and one assist, and Darius Quisneberry had 12 points, four rebounds and two assists.
The Penguins are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six home games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six at home versus a team with a losing road record. The over is 5-1 in Youngstown State’s last six overall as well.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games as an underdog and 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 as a road underdog of 7.0-12.5 The over is 16-7 in Green Bay’s last 23 road games and 20-9 in their last 29 Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Youngstown State in this one. Green Bay has posted some pretty solid offensive outings this year, but for the most part they’ve been inconsistent when it comes to scoring. The Phoenix hit 70 points or more just twice in their first eight games, and they’ve had a few outings where they’ve coughed up a ton of points on the other side. In Friday’s game the Phoenix kept up pretty well and had some good scoring going on, but I still like the Penguins better on the cover.
