The Bucknell Bison and the Navy Midshipmen meet in college basketball action from Alumni Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The Bucknell Bison waited until the new year, by choice or not by choice, to take the floor for the first time after finishing the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 14-20 including 8-10 in Patriot League conference play, defeating Holy Cross and upsetting American before falling in the tournament semi-finals to eventual champion Boston U. The Bison lose two of their four double-digit scorers from last year in Jimmy Sotos and Avi Toomer, but the good news for head coach Nathan Davis is that Andrew Funk and John Meeks are back as the other two double-digit scorers for Bucknell, with Meeks logging 11.2 PPG with 5.3 RPG while Funk had 10.8 PPG and 3.9 RPG last year. Also keep an eye on Deuce Turner as he could very well end up being the conference newcomer of the year. As a team, Bucknell averaged 67.6 points on 42.2% shooting from the field, 34.3% from 3-point range and 68.7% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 71 points on 46.1% shooting from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range this season.
The Navy Midshipmen come into this one having not played in over a month due to COVID issues within the program with the Middies sitting at 3-1 on the year following a 78-71 win over Georgetown on the road. Cam Davis leads Navy in scoring with 19.8 points per game through Navy’s first two contests of the year while John Carter Jr. has 13.5 points and at eam-high 4.8 rebounds per game this season. Tyler Nelson and Richard Njoku each have 4+ RPG for the Midshipmen this season. As a team, Navy is averaging 70.3 points on 46.4% shooting from the field, 32.6% from 3-point range and 72.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72.8 points on 49.3% shooting from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range this season.
Bucknell is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in their lat 5 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600. Navy is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 11-3 in their last 14 Saturday games. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Yeesh. Pick your poison here. I mean do you want a Bucknell team that’s probably hungry to take the floor but still has an offseason’s worth of rust to shake off compared to a month’s worth for Navy? I mean at least Navy’s taken the floor a couple of times and actually have a win over Georgetown on the year? I’ll take the lesser of two evils and back the team that’s made it to the flor already. Give me Navy in this one.
