The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Minnesota Golden Gophers meet Sunday in college basketball action from Williams Arena.
Ohio State comes into this one at 8-2 so far. The Buckeyes fell to Northwestern on December 26 but came back with a big win over Nebraska in their last game. As for Minnesota, they’re 9-2 this season. The Gophers had a three-game winning streak snapped by Wisconsin in their last game. Ohio State opened the year with five straight wins, taking out Illinois State, UMass Lowell, Morehead State, Notre Dame and Cleveland State. After the loss to Purdue it was wins over UCLA and Rutgers before a tough 71-70 loss to Northwestern. Ohio State came back with a big win over Nebraska their last time out, though.
In the 90-54 win over the Cornhuskers, Ohio State’s Justin Ahrens led the team on 18 points with two rebounds in 20 minutes. Zed Key added 14 points with four rebounds, and Duane Washington Chipped in 13 points, three assists and two boards in 23 minutes.
Over on the Minnesota side, they kicked off their season with six wins over Green Bay, LMU (twice), North Dakota, Boston College and UMKC. A loss to Illinois followed before wins over Saint Louis 90-82, Iowa 102-95 and Michigan State 81-56. Minnesota fell to Wisconsin 71-59 in their last game.
In the loss to the Badgers, Minnesota’s top scorer was Gabe Kalscheur with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Both Brandon Johnson and Liam Robbins provided 12 points and nine rebounds apiece, while Marcus Carr added 10 points with five boards and seven assists.
The Gophers are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games and 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games. Minnesota is 4-0 in their last four Sunday games and the over is 5-2 in the last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games after an ATS win and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four road games. Ohio State is 3-10 ATS in their last 13 Sunday games and the over is 5-2 in the last seven road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Ohio State here. Minnesota played a pretty ugly game against Wisconsin, coming up with a cold 31.3 percent shooting from the field while allowing the Badgers to go 30-for-59. It was a stark contrast to the Michigan State game, where the Gophers did just about everything right. Ohio State has hit 70 or more points in each of the last four, and should come out firing here. I think the Gophers can hang around for a while but the Buckeyes look better to me on a cover.
