The NJIT Highlanders and the UMass-Lowell River Hawks meet in college basketball action from the Costello Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
The NJIT Highlanders will look to build on their 73-67 win over the River Hawks last time out to improve to 3-2 on the year. Zach Cooks leads NJIT in scoring, averaging 17.2 PPG to go along with 6 RPG and 2.2 steals per game while Dylan O’Hearn came 2nd in scoring, not far off with 16.2 PPG shooting 59.2% from the field and 50% from 3-point range. San Antonio Brinson has 12 PPG to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for NJIT this year while Souleymane Diakite has 9.6 PPG and a team-high 7.2 RPG this season. As a team, NJIT is averaging 74.6 PPG on 42.3% shooting from the field, 34.7% from behind the arc and 74.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 75.4 points on 44.6% shooting from the field and 36.7% from 3-point range this season.
The UMass-Lowell River Hawks come into this one looking for a bounce back after the loss to NJIT last time out. Obadiah Noel leads UMass-Lowell with 22.4 PPG, shooting 48% from the field and 32.1% from 3-point range as the River Hawks’ lone double-digit scorer so far this season. Noel also leads the River Hawks with 3.2 APG this season while Connor Withers is averaging 5.9 PPG and a team-high 4.9 RPG this year. As a team, UMass-Lowell is averaging 65.1 PPG on 42.7% shooting from the field, 32.5% from 3-point range and 68.7% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.1 PPG on 43.2% shooting from the field and 29.5% from 3-point range this season.
NJIT is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. UMass-Lowell is 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 home games.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game as it’s hard to beat the same team in a span of as many days on a back-to-back. However, NJIT is the better team here and it’s not like playing on the road has bothered the Highlanders as they’ve played all five of their games on the road this season and I think the Highlanders emerge with another win here over a UMass-Lowell team that’s just not very good.
