The Winthrop Eagles and the Charleston Southern Buccaneers meet Monday in college basketball action from CSU Fieldhouse.
Winthrop enters this one at 7-0 so far this year. The Eagles are coming off of consecutive wins versus Campbell last week. As for Charleston Southern, they’re 1-5 so far. The Buccaneers have lost consecutive games to Hampton in their last pair of outings. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Winthrop has gotten off to a great start this year, but they’ve had a few close escapes mixed in. The Eagles opened with wins over UNC Greensboro, Little Rock and two versus USC Upstate. Since then it’s been a win over Furman and two victories 84-83 and 94-76 over Campbell.
In Thursday’s victory over the Camels, Winthrop’s top scorers were DJ Burns and Adonis Arms, each with 15 points and a combined six assists and four rebounds. Chandler Vaudrin tripled up for the Eagles in that one as well, with 10 points, 10 assists and 13 rebounds to his credit.
Over on the Charleston Southern side, it’s been a rough year so far. The Buccaneers kicked off with three straight losses to NC State, Eastern Kentucky and NC A&T before getting a win over Carver. After that came a pair of losses to Hampton; those came 67-55 and 70-68.
In the December 22 loss to Hampton, Charleston Southern’s Phlandrous Fleming managed 19 points with 10 rebounds and three assists. Sean Price added 16 points with nine rebounds and four assists, and Melvin Edwards notched a team-high 21 points with eight rebounds in 28 minutes.
The Buccaneers are 0-4 ATS in their last four Monday games and 1-8 ATS in their last nine after an ATS loss. Charleston Southern is 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games and 3-14 ATS in their last 17 overall.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. Winthrop is 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win and 5-2 ATS in their last seven Monday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Winthrop in this one. The Eagles have been posting some nice scoring totals this season, with 75 or more points in every game. Granted, Winthrop does give up a ton of points (71 or more in six straight games) but they’ve got more than enough offensive talent to make up the difference. Charleston Southern will probably hang around in this one for a while but I like the Eagles better on a cover.
