Pittsburgh enters this matchup at 5-2 so far. The Panthers had a five-game winning streak halted by Louisville in their last outing. As for Syracuse, they’re sitting at 6-1 so far. The Orange are riding a three-game win streak over Boston College, Northeastern and Buffalo. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Pittsburgh opened up their season with an 80-70 loss to St. Francis PA. Things got better after that however, as the Panthers took out Drexel, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Gardner-Webb and Miami in their next five outings. Pitt took another 10-point loss in their last game, falling 64-54 to Louisville.
In the loss to the Cardinals, Pittsburgh’s top scorer was Femi Odukale with 16 points, thre rebounds and one assist. The only other Panthers player in double-figures there was Xavier Johnson on 10 points with two rebounds in 22 minutes on the court.
Over on the Syracuse side, they opened their season with three straight wins, taking out Bryant, Niagara and Rider. The Orange then lost to Rutgers, but have since won their last three games. Those victories came over Boston College, Northeastern and Buffalo.
In the win over the Bulls, Syracuse’s Quincy Guerrier managed 27 points with 11 rebounds to lead the team. Alan Griffin also doubled up on 24 points with 10 rebounds and three assists, and Buddy Boeheim added 22 points with four assists and two rebounds in 42 minus of play.
The Orange are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 versus a team with a winning straight-up record and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games versus a team with a winning road record. The over is 23-11-1 in the Orange’s last 35 overall and the under is 14-6 in their last 20 Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 4-1 ATS in the last five games overall and 2-7 ATS in the last nine Wednesday games. The under is 3-1-1 in Pitt’s last five road games and 4-0 in their last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Syracuse in this one. Pittsburgh has generally scored pretty well this year, with 70 or more points in five of seven games. The Panthers have been at 67 or below in two of their last three however, and put up just 54 against Louisville. Syracuse is coming off a sketchy game against Buffalo (with a big OT period) and have hit 69 or more points in all but one game so far. I like this one to be a higher-scoring affair, with the Orange eking out a cover.
