The UCLA Bruins and the Arizona State Sun Devils meet in college basketball action from the Desert Financial Arena on Thursday night.
The UCLA Bruins will look ro add to their 7-2 mark on the year after picking up a 65-62 win over Colorado in their last game. Jaime Jaquez Jr. leads the Bruins in scoring with 13.3 PPG, shooting 50% from the floor and 46.9% from behind the 3-point line while Chris Smith is 2nd on the team in scoring with 12.6 PPG and 2nd in rebounding with 6.4 RPG this season. Johnny Juzang has 11 PPG and Tyger Campbell has 10.9 PPG with a team-high 7.2 APG this season. Jules Bernard has chipped in 10.2 PPG as UCLA’s 5th and final double-digit scorer to cap off the group heading into Thursday’s matchup while Cody Riley has 8.9 PPG and Jalen Hill has 8.4 PPG and a team-high 6.6 RPG this season. As a team, UCLA is averaging 75.3 PPG on 46.3% shooting from the field, 35.5% from 3-point range and 71.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 67.1 PPG on 42.5% shooting from the field and 29.7% from 3-point range this season.
The Arizona State Sun Devils will look to add to their 4-3 record but haven’t taken the floor in three weeks after a 76-63 loss to UTEP last time out. Remy Martin leads ASU in scoring with 1.69 PPG along with a team-high 3.6 APG while freshman Josh Christopher is right at the top of the mountain with Martin with 16.9 PPG ofhis own. Alonzo Verge Jr. has 15.4 PPG to go along with 4.2 RPG and 3 APG this season and Marcus Bagley comes in with 13 PPG and a team-high 5.8 RPG to round out the group of double-digit scorers for ASU heading into Thursday’s matchu but it’s worth noting that Bagley is questionable for this game with an achilles injury. As a team, Arizona State is averaging 77.1 PPG on 44.9% shooting from the field, 32.9% from behind the arc and 69.3% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 76.6 PPG on 45.6% shooting from the field, 35.8% from 3-point range and 72.3% from the foul line this season.
UCLA is 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 games overall and 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 Thursday games. Arizona State is 0-7 ATS in their last 7 home games and 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600. The favorite is 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
This is going to be an awesome game to close out the night, but with that said, I give UCLA the edge simply because you won’t find a Mick Cronin coached team that won’t play some form of defense, and anything is normally better than what Arizona State brings on a game to game basis. You also have to wonder if there’s some rust at play here as well. I’ll side with UCLA in this near pick ‘em.
