The Cincinnati Bearcats and the SMU Mustangs meet Thursday in college basketball action from SMU Moody Coliseum.
Cincinnati enters this one at 2-6 so far.The Bearcats are riding a five-game losing streak, most recently falling to Tulsa. As for SMU, they’re sitting at 6-1 this year. The Mustangs had a six-game winning streak broken by Houston in their last outing. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Cincinnati kicked off the year with a 2-1 record, losing to Xavier while otherwise taking out Lipscomb and Furman. Since then it’s been five straight losses for the Bearcats, however. Those defeats have come to Tennessee, South Florida, Georgia, UCF and Tulsa in succession.
In the loss to the Hurricane, Cincinnati’s top scorer was Keith Williams on 18 points with four rebounds and one assist. Jeremiah Davenport was the only other Bearcats player in double-figures there, notching 16 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes on the court.
Over on the SMU side, they began their season with a half-dozen straight wins. Those came courtesy of Sam Houston, Texas A&M-CC, Houston Baptist, Dayton, East Carolina and Temple. The Mustangs took a loss to a good Houston team in their last outing on Sunday, 74-60.
In the loss to the Cougars, SMU’s leading scorer was Kendric Davis with 23 points, four assists and eight rebounds. Feron Hunt notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards, while Ethan Chargois chipped in 10 points with four boards and four assists.
The Mustangs are 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five versus a team with a winning straight-up record. The over is 11-5 in SMU’s last 16 home games and the under is 4-0 in their last four after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Bearcats are 0-4 ATS in their last four after an ATS loss and 1-5 ATS in their last six Thursday games. Cincinnati is 8-20 ATS in their last 28 road games and the over is 4-0 in their last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with SMU here. The Mustangs had a rough matchup versus Houston in their last outing, but were able to keep the pace in the first half at least (a 33-32 advantage). SMU shot 40.4 percent from the field in that one, but were out-muscled on rebounding 45-32. Cincinnati has coughed up 70 or more points in each of their last four games, so there should be plenty of room here for the Mustangs to flex their offensive muscle.
