The FIU Panthers and the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders meet in college basketball action from the Murphy Athletic Center on Friday night.
The FIU Panthers will look to bounce back from a 71-66 home loss to Old Dominion that dropped the Panthers to 7-3 on the year. Antonio Daye Jr. leads the Panthers in scoring and assists with 17.9 PPG and 6.2 APG to go along with 3.6 RPG and 2.7 steals per game while Radshad Davis is 2nd in scoring and rebounding with 13.1 PPG and 6.4 RPG. Eric Lovett has 12.3 PPG and Tevin Brewer has 10.3 PPG with 3.9 APG this season. Dimon Carrigan also has 7.6 PPG as well as a team-high 7.3 RPG this season heading into Friday’s matchup. As a team, FIU is averaging 85.7 PPG on 46.1% shooting from the field, 37.5% from 3-point range and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72.6 PPG on 44.1% shooting from the field and 33% from 3-point range this season.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will be out to bounce back from a 70-51 home loss to Ole Miss in their last matchup to drop to 2-4 on the year. Dontrell Shuler leads the Blue Raiders in scoring and assists with 11.7 PPG and 2.8 APG while Jordan Davis is 2nd in scoring and rebounding with 10.8 PPG and 4.8 RPG, making up the pair of double-digit scorers for MTSU heading into Friday’s matchup with FIU. Jo’Vontae Millner-Criss has 8.6 PPG as well as a team-leading 6.2 RPG for Middle Tennessee as well this season. As a team, Middle Tennessee is averaging 62.8 PPG on 37.2% shooting from the field, 29.9% from 3-point range and 71.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 64.2 PPG on 41.8% shooting from the field and 23.8% from 3-point range this season.
FIU is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 Friday games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. Middle Tennessee is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 8-1 in their last 9 games overall.
Something about this line looks funky, but if it’s a trap I’ll bite. Even with games against North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast as their two true road games, FIU is still one of the best offensive teams in the country and while the defense isn’t outstanding, the Panthers haven’t completely let it slip to the side. Middle Tennessee’s played some tough opposition, but the Blue Raiders have just struggled against the number for the bulk of the season. In a pick ‘em, as funny as it looks, I have to side with FIU in this one.
