Rider began the year on an ugly 1-6 streak over their first seven, falling to Syracuse, St. John’s, Manhattan, Iona (twice) and NJIT. After a win over Fairfield and a loss to Fairfield, Rider managed a 76-70 win over Niagara on Friday.
In the victory over the Purple Eagles, Rider’s top scorer was Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson with 19 points and seven rebounds. Dwight Murray added 14 points, four assists and eight boards and Christian Ings had 13 points, six assists and one rebound for the Broncs.
Over on the Eagles’ side, they started out the year with three losses to Syracuse and Saint Peter’s before a three-game win streak over Fairfield and Albany. After splitting two games with Marist, Niagara took the loss on Friday in their ninth game of the season.
In Friday’s defeat, Niagara’s top performer was Marcus Hammond on 17 points, five assists and six rebounds. Raheem Solomon added 13 points with six boards and two assists, and Kobi Nwandu chipped in 11 points.
The Eagles are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 home games and 19-7 ATS in their last 26 on Saturday. The over is 5-2 in Niagara’s last seven Saturday games and the under is 8-3 in their last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Broncs are 0-5 ATS in their last five Saturday games and 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall. Rider is 1-4 ATS in the last five road games versus a team with a winning home record and the over is 4-1 in their last five road games.
PICK: I’m going to take Niagara here. Friday’s matchup was a pretty great one. The Eagles had a 35-33 edge heading into halftime before the Broncs found their groove and deposited 43 points in the second half on the way to the six-point victory. I expect this to be another close affair, with Niagara learning from their mistakes and asserting themselves in a cover.
