2021-01-09 14:00:00 EDT
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Texas A&M Aggies meet in college basketball action on Saturday afternoon from Reed Arena.
The Tennessee Volunteers will look to build off of a 79-74 win over Arkansas in their last matchup to improve to 8-1 on the year. Vic Bailey Jr. leads the Vols in scoring with 13.4 PPG while John Fulkerson is 2nd in scoring with 11.7 PPG as well as 2nd in rebounding with 6.3 RPG and Jaden Springer is 3rd in scoring with 10 PPG, rounding out the trio of double-digit scorers for Tennessee heading into Saturday’s matchup. Josiah Jordan James also has 9 PPG with a team-high 6.6 RPG while Santiago Vescovi has 8.9 PPG and a team-high 3.7 APG this season. As a team, Tennessee is averaging 77.8 PPG on 45.5% shooting from the field, 34.4% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 57.1 PPG on 38.8% shooting from the field and 30.8% from 3-point range this season.
The Texas A&M Aggies will look to rebound after falling to 6-3 on the year after a 78-54 loss to South Carolina in their last matchup. Emanuel Miller leads the Aggies in scoring and rebounding with an average of 18.5 PPG and 8.3 RPG while Quenton Jackson is the only other double-digit scorer for the Aggies, posting 12.1 PPG, shooting 54.1% from the field and 44.8% from 3-point range this season. Andre Gordon has 8.9 PPG and 2.8 APG while Savion Flagg has 7.4 PPG and a team-high 2.9 APG this season. As a team, Texas A&M is averaging 67.3 PPG on 44.1% shooting from the field, 29.2% from 3-point range and 71.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65 PPG on 42.7% shooting from the field and 34.2% from 3-point range this season.
Tennessee is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a win while the over is 20-7 in their last 27 road games. Texas A&M is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team with a winning road record while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 home games. The road team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
The points with the Aggies are tempting as Texas A&M does their best work at home, but the problem is that Tennessee is the toughest test that the Aggies have had up to this point by a wide margin and we’ve seen Texas A&M’s offense shut down against much less. Tennessee hasn’t had a ton of luck covering numbers lately as they’ve been in a bunch of close games, but this is a Volunteers group that also held App State to 38 points earlier this season and the last game against Arkansas was the first time Tennessee gave up more than 66 points all year long. I think Texas A&M is in trouble here, so I’ll lay the points with the Volunteers in this spot.
