Alabama State opened up their season on a 66-49 loss to Grambling State. In that one, no Hornets player hit double digits, but Brandon Battle did pull down 10 rebounds with six points and one assist. Both Kenny Strawbridge and DJ Heath chipped in nine points as well.
Game two against Jackson State didn’t go well for the Hornets either; they fell 60-44. Alabama State’s top performer there was Strawbridge on 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists. EJ Clark and Jordan Cousin each contributed eight points as well.
Over on the Arkansas-Pine Bluff side, they started off the season on a five-game losing streak, dropping to Marquette, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Northwestern and St. Louis. The Golden Lions took out Arkansas State before a three-game losing streak and a win over MS Valley State.
In the 92-52 win over the Delta Devils, AR-Pine Bluff’s top scorer was Shaun Doss, who notched a double-double on 23 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Dequan Morris added 18 points with five rebounds, and Markedric Bell had 14 points, five assists and five boards.
The Lions are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games after a straight-up win and 2-7 in their last nine versus a team with a losing straight-up record. The under is 13-5 in AR-Pine Bluff’s last 18 after an ATS win and 6-1 in their last seven after a straight-up win.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 1-4 ATS in their last five Saturday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four games after a straight-up loss. Alabama State is 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and the under is 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
PICK: I’m going to take AR-Pine Bluff here. The Hornets have stumbled in their first two outings this season and haven’t been able to find any offense. Alabama State has notched a combined 93 points across their first pair. AR-Pine Bluff has a few scoring duds to their credit this year, but should find plenty of opportunities to put up points in Saturday’s matchup.
