Alcorn State hasn’t had any luck this season, falling big in all five games they’ve played so far. The Braves have taken losses to UAB, Houston, Liberty, Vanderbilt and Baylor in their first quintet, all by double-digit margins.
In the 105-76 loss to the Bears on December 30, Alcorn State’s top scorer was Tyree Corbett with 24 points and seven rebounds. David Pierce added 13 points and one board, and Byron Joshua had 12 points with eight assists and five rebounds.
Over on the Tigers’ side, they opened up with five straight losses as well, but got a win in their last game. Jackson State took defeats to Mississippi State, Mississippi, LA Tech, Bradley and Iowa State in their first five. Then came a 60-44 victory over Alabama State on Monday.
In the win over the Hornets, Jackson State’s leading scorer was Tristan Jarrett with 25 points and three boards, and Cainan McClelland posted 14 points with two rebounds. Jayveous McKinnis chipped in 13 boards and seven points as well.
The Tigers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and 5-1 ATS in their last six home games. Jackson State is 5-1 ATS in their last six at home versus a team with a losing road record as well.
Meanwhile, Alcorn State is 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 road games. The Braves are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 versus a team with a losing straight-up record and the over is 25-9 in their last 34 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Jackson State here. Granted, there’s not much to like about a matchup between teams that are a combined 1-10, though. Neither has been scoring well: Jackson State hasn’t gotten past 60 yet, and the Braves have been at 65 or below outside of garbage time against Baylor. This should be a competitive matchup, but I like the Tigers to power out a sloppy, lower-scoring game.
