Houston Baptist began their season with four straight losses, falling to TCU, Arizona State, SMU and Rice. After a win over Champion, Houston Baptist fell to Rice, North Texas and Oklahoma before a win over NW State. The Huskies fell 66-63 to Abilene Christian in their last game.
In the loss to the Wildcats, Houston Baptist’s Za-Ontay Boothman led the way on 22 points with three rebounds and two assists. Pedro Castro added 13 points with 10 rebounds, and Darius Lee managed 12 points with three boards in 25 minutes of action.
Over on the Lamar side, their season started with four straight losses to Houston, Tulane, Lipscomb and Air Force. The Cardinals beat LA-Monroe but then fell to Southern Miss, LA Tech and UTSA before another win over Southeastern LA. Since then it’s been losses to ACU and Nicholls State.
In the loss to the Colonels, Lamar’s Anderson Kopp doubled up on 15 points with 10 rebounds. Avery Sullivan also hit a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Kasen Harrison logged 13 points, four assists and three rebounds in 37 minutes on the floor.
The Cardinals are 1-5 ATS in the last six Saturday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a losing straight-up record. Lamar is 1-4 ATS in their last five after an ATS win and the under is 9-4 in their last 13 overall.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 road games. Houston Baptist is 5-2 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Houston Baptist. Admittedly however, there’s not much intrigue in a game between teams that are a combined 4-17. Still, considering Lamar has been above 66 points just twice this season I can’t trust the Cardinals offense to carry them to a cover here. Houston Baptist doesn’t look much better, but they’ve got a few high-scoring outings to their credit this season.
