The FIU Panthers and the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders meet in college basketball action from the Murphy Athletic Center on Saturday evening.
The FIU Panthers will look to sweep the back-to-back with Middle Tennessee State after taking Friday’s matchup by a final score of 68-55. Antonio Daye Jr. leads the Panthers in scoring and assists with 17.8 PPG and 5.8 APG to go along with 3.9 RPG and 2.5 steals per game while Radshad Davis is 2nd in scoring and rebounding with 13.3 PPG and 6.1 RPG this season. Eric Lovett is 3rd in scoring with 11.6 PPG while Tevin Brewer has 10.5 PPG with 3.8 APG this season, capping off the group of double-digit scorers for FIU up to this point in the season. Dimon Carrigan also has 7.4 PPG with a team-high 6.9 APG for the Panthers this year. As a team, FIU is averaging 84.1 PPG on 46.3% shooting from the field, 36.7% from 3-point ragne and 69.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 71 PPG on 43.7% shooting from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range this season.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will look to bounce back and earn a split of the back-to-back after dropping Friday’s opener. Dontrell Shuler leads the Blue Raiders in scoring and assists with 11.7 PPG and 2.8 APG while Jordan Davis has 10.6 PPG with 4.4 RPG, making up the lone pair of double-digit scorers for Middle Tennessee up to this point in the year. Jo’Vontae Millner-Criss also has 8.7 PPG while leading the Blue Raiders in rebounding with 6.3 RPG as well this season. As a team, Middle Tennessee is averaging 61.7 PPG on 37.5% shooting from the field, 29.6% from 3-point range and 70.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 64.7 PPG on 42.7% shooting from the field and 24% from 3-point range this season.
FIU is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 15-7 ATS in their last 22 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. Middle Tennessee is 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games overall and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games as an underdog.
I know the trend that's out there that if you win and cover the first game then the percentages say to go the other way in game two of the back-to-back, but I'm not buying it here. FIU was heads and shoulders the better team in game one and I don't see anything changing in game two with the way Middle Tennessee has a tendency to struggle offensively. I think FIU wins this game by 6-8 points at the least, so I'll side with FIU and lay the points here.
