The Santa Clara Broncos and the Saint Mary’s Gaels meet Saturday in college basketball action from McKeon Pavilion.
Santa Clara enters this matchup at 6-2 so far. The Broncos have lost consecutive games to Colorado State and USC. As for Saint Mary’s, they’re 9-2 this season. The Gaels are coming off a victory over Sacramento State in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Santa Clara started out their year with six straight wins, but have lost their last pair. The wins came versus Idaho State, UC Davis, Nicholls State, CSUB, Cal Poly and Fresno Pacific. Since then it’s been losses to Colorado State 70-57 and USC 86-63.
In the loss to the Trojans, Santa Clara’s top scorers (and the only players on the team in double-figures) were Josip Vrankic and Christian Carlyle. That duo each scored 13 points with a combined one assist and seven rebounds for the Broncos.
Over on the Gaels’ side, they started off with a loss to Memphis this year, but then took their next eight games. Those wins came versus Northern Iowa, SD State, Nicholls State, Texas Southern, UTEP, San Jose State, Eastern Washington and Colorado State. The Gaels then lost to San Diego State and took out Sacramento State.
In the 63-45 win over Sac State, Saint Mary’s leading contributor was Tommy Kuhse with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Matthias Tass chipped in with 16 points, six rebounds and one assist as well.
Santa Clara is 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Saturday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four road games. The over is 22-8 in the Broncos’ last 30 road games and 19-7 in their last 26 road games versus a team with a winning home record.
Meanwhile, the Gaels are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four Saturday games and the over is 8-1 in tier last nine Saturday games. The under is 11-5 in Saint Mary’s last 16 versus a team with a winning straight-up record as well.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Saint Mary’s. The Gaels ran into the buzzsaw of a pretty darn good San Diego State team in their last outing with just 49 points, but otherwise they’ve been taking care of business lately even if it doesn’t show up on the scoreboard. Santa Clara isn’t a big-scoring team either, so the Gaels should be able to handle a cover here if they’re on.
