The Chattanooga Mocs and the Citadel Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from McAllister Field House.
Chattanooga comes into this one at 10-2 so far. The Mocs had lost consecutive games, but managed a win over Samford on Wednesday. As for the Citadel, they’re rolling at 7-0 this year. The Bulldogs took out Presbyterian in their last game on December 22. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Chattanooga stormed out of the gate this season with a nine-game winning streak, taking out such teams as Tennessee Tech, Northern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, UNC Asheville, UAB and Tennessee State. Losses to Furman and VMI came next, then a 73-68 win over Samford.
In the Wednesday victory over the Bulldogs, Chattanooga’s top scorer was David Jean-Baptiste on 22 points and three rebounds. Malachi Smith added 21 points with six assists and five boards, while AJ Caldwell doubled up on 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Over on the Citadel side, they’ve been able to rattle off wins in their first seven games, but haven’t played in a while. The Bulldogs’ victories have come versus Piedmont, NC A&T, Toccoa Falls, CIU, Carver, Longwood and Presbyterian in succession.
In the December 22 win over Presbyterian, the Citadel’s top performer was Hayden Brown on 25 points, four rebounds and two assists. Kaiden Rice added 24 points with five rebounds, and Tyler Moffe doubled up on 10 points, 11 assists and three boards in 30 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs are 2-6 ATS in the last eight home games and 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall. The Citadel is 15-6 ATS in the last 21 at home versus a team with a winning road record and the under is 5-2 in their last seven Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Mocs are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 road games and 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall. Chattanooga is 10-4-2 ATS in their last 16 Saturday games and the over is 4-1 in their last five Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going with Chattanooga. The Mocs have been competitive in every game this year. Even in their two losses, Chattanooga’s margin of defeat was five points or fewer. Sure, there have been some close escapes, but the Mocs have gotten the job done. As for the Citadel, they’ve played a few overmatched opponents this year and the long layoff gives me pause. This should be an interesting matchup but I like Chattanooga on the cover better.
