Rice kicked off the year with four straight wins before falling to New Mexico in game five. After a win over Houston Baptist and a loss to Sam Houston, Rice won three more games in a row before falling 101-89 to UTEP in the Friday game.
In Friday’s defeat, Rice’s top scorer was Max Fiedler with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Travis Evee added 21 points with two rebounds and two assists, and Riley Abercrombie had 14 points and five boards.
Over on the UTEP side, they opened up their year at 2-2 before getting wins over Arizona State and Benedictine Mesa. The Miners then split games with Southern Miss 74-66 (loss) and 77-62 (win) before their Friday win over the Owls.
In Friday’s game, UTEP’s top performer was Bryson Williams with 29 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Jamal Bieniemy managed 24 points with six assists and three boards, and Keonte Kennedy posted 22 points with seven boards and five assists.
The Miners are 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games and 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games. UTEP is 8-2 in their last 10 overall and the over is 5-2 in the last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Owls are 1-5 ATS in the last six road games versus a team with a winning home record and the under is 6-2 in their last eight overall. The under is 6-2 in Rice’s last eight overall and 5-1 in their last six road games.
PICK: I’m going to take Rice here. The Owls fell behind with a wild first half on Friday, trailing 55-44 at the break. The points continued to pour in during the second half, and Rice couldn’t keep up. The Owls have put up some nice offensive numbers in their last four games, with 73 or more points in each outing. I like Rice to turn the defensive screws a little better here and come away with a cover. Should be another fun game.
