The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores meet in college basketball action from the Memorial Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs come into this one looking to add to their 7-4 mark on the year following a 78-63 win over Missouri last time out. D.J. Stewart Jr. leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 18.8 PPG while Iverson Molinar is right behind in 2nd with 18.6 PPG and a team-high 3.6 APG while shooting 48.3% from the field and 51.6% from 3-point range this season. Tolu Smith is 3rd on Mississippi State in scoring and tops in rebounding with 12.7 PPG as well as 8.9 PPG this season to round out the scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs heading into Saturday’s matchup. As a team, Mississippi State is averaging 74.4 PPG on 45.7% shooting from the field, 38.3% from 3-point range and 63% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.6 PPG on 40.2% shooting from the floor and 35.3% from behind the arc this season.
The Vanderbilt Commodores will look to bounce back from back-to-back losses following a 77-74 loss to Kentucky last time out. Scotty Pippen Jr. leads the Commodores in scoring and assists with an average of 22 PPG and 5 APG while Dylan Disu is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 12.3 PPG and 9 RPG this season. Myles Stute has 11.5 PPG to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Vandy heading into their matchup with Mississippi State on Saturday. As a team, Vanderbilt is averaging 73.1 PPG on 43.1% shooting from the field, 33.8% from 3-point range and 75.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69 PPG on 43.8% shooting from the field and 31.3% from 3-point range this season.
Mississippi State is 15-6 ATS in their last 21 Saturday games while the over is 8-1 in their last 9 road games. Vanderbilt is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record and 18-41 ATS in their last 59 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600 while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. The underdog is 9-4-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings between these two teams.
The points with Vanderbilt as a home dog are tempting seeing as how this feels like a prime letdown spot for the Bulldogs after their massive win over Missouri and the underdog’s had a lot of recent success in this matchup. However, Vanderbilt’s struggled when having to take a step up in competition, and I just think that the two sides are even in the front court, with the Bulldogs having an edge in guard play so I’ll lay the points with Mississippi State in this spot.
