The Mercer Bears and the Chattanooga Mocs meet in college basketball action from McKenzie Arena on Wednesday night.
The Mercer Bears will look to bounce back after an 83-80 loss to Furman in their last outing. Ross Cummings leads the Bears in scoring with 16.6 PPG while Neftali Alvarez is 2nd in scoring and tops in assists with 5.8 APG. Felipe Haase is averaging 12.5 PPG with a team-high 9.5 RPG along with 3.9 APG. Maciej Benger has 12.1 PPG with 4.5 RPG and Leon Ayers III has 11.7 PPG with 4.7 RPG to make up the group of double-digit scorers for Mercer up to this point in the year. As a team, Mercer is averaging 81.6 PPG on 48.8% shooting from the field, 38.2% from behind the arc and 67.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.2 PPG on 43.8% shooting from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range this season.
The Chattanooga Mocs will look to bounce back from a 92-87 road loss to the Citadel in their last matchup. David Jean-Baptiste leads the Mocs in scoring with 19.1 PPG while Malachi Smith is 2nd on the Mocs in scoring but leads the team in rebounding and assists with 10.2 PPG and 3.8 APG. Stefan Kenic also has 13.2 PPG to make up the trio of double-digit scorers for Chattanooga heading into Wedneday’s matchup against Mercer. As a team, Chattanooga is averaging 76.5 PPG on 45.2% shooting from the field, 38.1% from behind the 3-point line and 78.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.7 PPG on 46.9% shooting from the field and 31.8% from 3-point range this season.
Mercer is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Wednesday games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games. Chattanooga is 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 games overall and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record. The road team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
Getting Mercer in a pick ‘em spot here is tempting, but the fact is that the Bears have struggled in their last couple of games and the Bears were getting a ton of points at Furman but they still took the loss. Granted, a 3-2 record on the road is nothing to sneeze at, but Chattanooga’s been so good at home this season that I think the Mocs at home are the play here in what is a lean at best for me.
