Nicholls State began the season with a pair of wins over UC Davis and Idaho State, but then lost their next five versus Santa Clara, California, Saint Mary’s, LSU and Sam Houston State. Since then it’s been a pair of wins for the Colonels over Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana.
In the win over the Lions, Nicholls State’s Najee Garvin and Jitaurious Gordon each notched 17 points, combining for five assists with 14 rebounds as well. Kevin Johnson added 15 points and three assists while Andre Jones chipped in 10 points and six boards for the Colonels.
Over on the Demons’ side, they kicked off their season with a five-game losing streak before beating Champion in game five. Seven losses followed versus Tulsa, Missouri State, Gonzaga, Washington State, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word came afterward, then a win over McNeese State on Saturday.
In the 78-75 win over the Cowboys, Northwestern State’s Jamaure Gregg, Trenton Massner and Jovan Zelenbaba each posted 13 points, combining for four assists and eight rebounds as well. Jairus Roberson managed 10 points in 20 minutes for the Demons as well.
The Demons are 0-5 ATS in their last five versus a team with a losing straight-up record and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 Wednesday games. The over is 6-1 in Northwestern State’s last seven after an ATS win and 4-1 in the last five at home versus a team with a road winning percentage below .400.
Meanwhile, the Colonels are 4-1 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. Nicholls State is 16-7 ATS in their last 23 road games and the under is 4-1 in their last five road games.
PICK: I’m going with Nicholls State here. Granted, both these teams’ records don’t look that great, but each has made some positive steps forward lately. Nicholls State has put up 76 or more points in each of their last four games, and they’ve been close in a few losses this year. The Demons have hit 78 or more in two of their last three, so don’t be surprised to see the over come in here. Should be a fun game but I like the Colonels offense a little more right now.
